Quit job after 5 months of getting GC

I am getting ready to apply for my citizenship. However I have some questions that I need your expert advice/thoughts/concerns. I quit my job in about 5 months after getting the GC. I read in this forum that one needs to work at least for one year after getting the GC. Can I fall into trouble by applying for citizenship? Can INS cancel my GC? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Don't worry too much about it. As long as you are working in the similar field and don't have other issues, I think this an overly blown issue. You have to have an strong intent to remain with the employer who sponsored your GC. If you or the employer didn't lie about the job or the conditions during the GC process, you should be ok. I personally think people have made too much out of it.

If you got the GC more than 5 yrs and 5 months ago, then this may not be as obvious to the interviewer as you list the employment in the past 5 yrs on N-400 form. In rare cases, an interview can and do dig into the GC process and the employment history. But that happens, generally if they suspect some sort of wrong doing or a fraud. In that event they can even look at student visa paperwork also.

i agree with you. however, leaving the sponsoring company 5 months after the person who recieved the greencard, i am not too sure it could show a strong intention to remain with that employer thou. if he were laid off, it would be a different story, because he did not intent to leave, however, the company did let him go. Since it is not the case to the OP, i guess there has rooms for risk.

of course, i do not really expect a person who would be working for the same sponsoring company *forever*.

There is always risk. Staying for a reasonable time with the employer is the main thing. You can argue forever about what is "reasonable." For one people, 3 months is reasonable, for others, 1 year. The longer you stay, the less obviously is the risk. 6 months is a nice middle ground, but it is by no means a number cast in stone. So, I wouldn't be concerned too much. But just in case, if push comes to shove, it may be good if you can show that the reasons for leaving the employer only came up after you got the GC.

i agree with you. the OP should and must have to show evidence about things occured after he received green card and he had to make a decision to leave the company.

i left my previous company after 4 years i received the green card. i believe it is more than a reasonable time which i can even define :)

Natureli: For what its worth I left my job sooner than you did and it did not come up in my interview at all. I have passed the interview and now waiting for my oath.

Thank you FoxyIdiot, I thought I am the only person to quit a job so soon. Thanks all for shedding some light on this matter.
