My wife needs to travel on an emergency basis to India. While booking her tickets, I found out that her Indian passport is expiring on 29th of this month. Has anybody have ideas on how to go about getting an emergency passport issued? This is at CGI, Houston. Thanks a lot for your replies.

There is a "TATKAL" scheme that is available in Indian missions for an adidtional fee of $150. here is ithe quote from their website:

Passport submitted at the counter can be issued within 1 to 3 working days in an emergency /tatkal scheme for which an additional emergency fee of US$ 150 will be charged apart from the normal processing fee of US$ 40 (for normal booklet of 36 pages)

Check status of Indian Passport application?

Hi, I tried to search for this, but could not find any references. I just applied for my wife's Indian Passport at the Indian consulate at Houston. I have the application number. Is there any way to check the status of the passport online? You can check the status online if you have applied in India by going to https://passport.gov.in/ but there seems to be no way to check status for applications filed outside India

Ideas?

I figured I would follow up on this. Right now, the Houston consulate turn around time for Indian passports is 7 business days (provided the last passport was issued at Houston consulate).

It is interesting that they charge $150.00 for emergency passport. If you go to http://passport.gov.in/cpv/TatkalScheme.htm, the fee is between Rs 1000 ~ Rs 2500 if you apply in India. That is a big difference in fees.
