I am a Doctor from India. Currently I am in the US for an exam(USMLE), and I have applied for Residency (Post graduation in Medicine) in US.
My stay i 94 expires in early jan '07. My problem is that the hospitals continue interviews till end of january.

My questions are :
1.would it be advisable for a candidate like me to go in for an extension for a period of 20 days or so?
I had heard that candidates like me ( doctors planning to work in US), its not advisable to get a visa extension because it might create problems for me when i convert to a work visa ( H1 or J1). I have actually heard of some cases who's work visa (H1/J1) got rejected in Mumbai consulate, and incidentally, they had extended their stay visa when in US.
2. If the application gets rejected before the i 94 expires ( say by 2 weeks before) do i have to leave immediately or i can stay uptill two more weeks.
3. Do i have to send the original I 94 or a copy for application, have got different views from forums and people

thanks a lot

A1: Requesting an extension is a dual edged sword. If denied, 222(g) may create problems in the future.
A2: If the extension application is rejected before the I-94 expires, you can stay until the original I-94 expires.
A3: According to the form, B-2 applicants must send the original I-94. However some people only send I-94 copies and the application is duly processed.

Thank you triple citizen for the prompt reply.

You have guided me once before also ( regarding how to get 6 months stay at immigration) and I was successful, thanks for that as well.

I need to stay on for more 2 to 3 weeks for completing my interviews, and i am really not sure whether to apply for extension or no. Do you think my reason is valid enough guaranteeing extension, or you think it is safer to go back to india and come back. I am hoping to get a h1b or a j1 from one of these hospitals for which I will come back in mid 2008.

even if I do go and come back from india, how much time interval you think i should keep?

I really appreciate your help.

If I was in your situation, I would go back and return closer to the interviews. At the end of the day, it is your call.
