Questions of status change and visa stamping

Guys,
I'd appreciate if someone can answer the following questions.

1. If you are a student on F1 and get your H1 done, can you work without getting the H1 visa stamped or do you have to get the visa stamped first to officially change your status?

2. If you came to this country on B1 and get your H1 done, can you work without getting the H1 visa stamped or do you have to get the visa stamped first to officially change your status?

3. I saw a few threads about people getting H1 visa stamped in Canada or Mexico. Are those just rare cases or do the US immigration laws allow you to get your H1 stamped in Canada and Mexico. I read on the Department of State website that ONLY "automatic revalidation" can be done in Canada/Mexico, for everything else you have to go to your home country. What is automatic revalidation? Bottom line, I just want to know for sure that you can get H1 stamped in Canada or Mexico.

I know that before the rules changed because of before Sept 11 2001, you could work without getting the H1 stamped and you could also easily get the visa stamped in Canada / Mexico. But I heard that under the new rules you cannot work until you get the visa stamped and also you have to go to your home country to get the visa stamped. How much of that is true?

Please answer all my questions. This information is very important to me.
Thanks

Yes , you can provided you have your status. (Mean your H1 come with I 94 tab at the bottom.

No. B1 can not be converted to H1, but you will get new H1 for that you have to go to your home country to stamp the visa in your pp.

F1 to H1, H4 to H1, or H1 validation can be done in Mexico/Canada

Thank you for the answers.

I have a similar question
I am currently in US on H4 and in the process of applying for H1. Once I get H1 approved, do I have to necessarily get it stamped in pp , in order to work ? Or can i start working without passport stamping ?
