Questions about i-131 travel documents

Hello,
My wife (currently a conditional green card holder) is pregnant and we wish to have the baby back in our home country. We need to fill out the i-131 travel document, but had some questions:

1. would putting "having a baby abroad" a reason they'd deny the travel document? (having a baby in our home country is virtually free, as apposed to here....$$$$)

2. ultimately, my wife would like to get her US citizenship...would getting the travel document delay that process?

thank you for your help!

I would love to know the answer to this question too... because that's in our plans for the next baby, but we only are thinking about being abroad for 6 months. I have a 10 year GC.

My assumption was that you do not need any travel documents when you are GC holder? I went twice to India when I had my GC(now a USC) without any travel documents and never had a problem.

Well, according to the terms of the green card, you cannot spend more than 6 months out of the year outside the US, which we intend on doing.

But I've heard of instances like your own where as long as you spend less than a year outside the US, coming back to the US was never an issue.

A reentry permit is needed for traveling 1 year or more outside the US. The pregnancy and post-birth recovery could cause the trip to extend beyond a year.

The permit is not mandatory when the trip is under 1 year, but trips over 6 months still tend to bring increased hassles at the port of entry, and a reentry permit makes the entry smoother after those long trips.

Just write "medical reasons" instead of getting so specific.

The document itself won't delay anything; it's the length of time spent outside the US that would jeopardize her citizenship.

You definitely won't have any issues with having the re-entry permit when it comes to her wanting to become a citizen, but during her application process her time outside the country might come into question.

The 2 ways she could lose her GC would be:
1)Remain outside of the US for more than one year without obtaining a re-entry permit or returning resident visa. However in determining whether your status has been abandoned any length of absence from the US may be considered, even if it is less than one year.

2)Remain outside of the US for more than two years after issuance of a re-entry permit without obtaining a returning resident visa. However in determining whether your status has been abandoned any length of absence from the US may be considered, even if it is less than one year

I would also put that you are wanting to apply for the reentry permit for "medical reasons"
