Questions about EAD for an H1 holder

Hi,

I am new to this issue. I am an H1 holder. I have some questions about EAD.

1. What\'s the use of EAD for an H1 holder?
2. If I get an EAD, but don\'t use it, will I be out of H1 status automatically?
3. I know there are two ways to apply for EAD: one is apply in INS service center along with I485, the other is apply in local INS office after 90 days. Do these two ways get the same EAD? ( because I heard one can only get interim EAD, valid for 4 months, from local office, while from service center, it is one-year EAD)

2) No. You do not lose your H1 status simply by obtaining EAD. You lose your H1 only if you activate your EAD i.e by taking up a part-time job or if your current H1 expires and you have exhausted your 6 year quota.
