Question: temporary stay in Canada

Hi, great forum here!

I'm an American, and a pretty frequent visitor to Canada. I actually lived in Montreal earlier this year for about a month. The immigration process went fairly smoothly, since I had enrolled in a school there, and I was given a visa, which was basically a piece of paper stapled to my passport stating how long I could stay in Canada, what I was prohibited from doing, etc. I was told by immigration that I upon leaving Canada, I had to hand over this paper to the immigration office at the border.

Well, on my way to the border back to the States, I couldn't find any sign of the immigration office (it was at night, and I just couldn't find it), so I left Canada with this paper still attached to my passport.

The reason I'm saying all this is that I plan to visit Canada to attend a school again, and I'm a little worried that when I reach the border, Canadian immigration is going to hassle me and make some excuse to deny me entry. I'm pretty sure I'll be ok, but there's always that possibility.

Another question I have is this: since I plan to stay in Canada for a pretty long time this time (about 3-4 months), and since I won't be allowed to work, I'm guessing immigration would want to know that I have sufficient funds to live off of. But I'm a bit hesitant about showing them my bank statement, as I find that a bit intrusive.

I'm wondering if I can instead show Canadian immigration a letter from my bank stating that I have enough funds in my account to last me several months.

Any help on this is appreciated. Thanks!

Intrusive? You want to be given the privilege to spend 3-4 months in a country where you have no automatic right to even enter and you find disclosing your finances as intrusive?
