question on residency?

Hello,
I am currently on a OPT and my company will be paying to get my H1 process started. However, i fear that since the company is really small (even though its been here for about 5-7yrs) my H1 might be rejected. However, my girlfriend who is a US citizen insists if something like this happened, then we can get married. Lets assume worst case scenario and my H1 is rejected and i get married and my OPT expires after a few months. Will i be able to stay in US? Will i also be able to work for my company in that case? Should i be applying for a GC if i get married or some sort of residency. Please let me know what your opinions are.
Thanks

Once you get married, you can apply for Permanent Residency. Although this will be conditional and will be meticulously scrutinezed.

Thanks alren. When you say conditional and meticulously scrutinized, what exactly does that imply? can i still work and stay in US? Sorry for being an airhead but i really dont know immigration!
Appreciate your help.

I believe you will get it for 2 years. After which you've to approach BCIS or whatever it is called then to get the condition removed, provided you still satisfy the condition of your PR, i.e. your marriage.

In terms of scrutinity, they want to check that the marriage is not solely to get a GC. They *might* ask to see proof of living together, same residence, pictures etc.
