Question on J1 waiver application

I am a J1 visa holder finishing my medicine residency in less than 3 months. I got an offer for a J-1 waiver job Indiana, however, Indiana has already filled the 30 positions this year and won't accept application till October 2005. While my DS2019 can be extended till I take board exam (plus one month grace period), I will be out of status after that. Should I submit for H-1 visa now and for waiver in October?
Can anyone please let me know if you see any problems with this? Thanks so much.

i don;t think you can apply for an H1B before you are approved by DOS for a J1 waiver. you may have to do a year of fellowship and get a new DS2019.
 
Thanks for your reply. I'd like to share some of the advice i received: I should apply to State department in 10/05 and also apply for H-1 visa prior to DS expiration (In this case, before 11/05) so as not to be out of status.
