Question on I-94 numbering and its validity.

I have H1 stamping and valid I-94 till May 2002. I have applied for new H1 in Jan 2002. I am yet to receive my new H1 (extension). Now if I go to India, I have to give back my existing I94. While coming back to US I will get another fresh I-94 with different number till May 2002.

By the time I reach US I will get new H1 with old I94 with an extended period. If I send it to St. Louis for H1 re-validation, is this I94 which I received with old I94 number with extended period is valid?

But the same number I94 I gave it back while leaving from US. Please advice me how it works?

I am in the same situation. My I-94 and visa expired on 10Jan02 but have an approval from a diff. company which is valid till 2003. The I-94 nos. now are different. Please advise.
