Question on I-539

After being laid off from TN in order to file I-539 what should be the appropirate answer for this question?

1. I/We request that my/our current or requested status be extended until (mm/dd/yyyy):_______ ?

Six months is the norm. This is to be filed the day of lay-off, not after. Give reason as wrapping up US affairs. You will in all likelihood either have found a new TN, or left US at least once by the time this is approved, so duration is not crucial.
Remember, the I-539 only covers you until you first leave the US, then it is void and your re-entry is controlled by CBP officers.
