question about working in foreign country with green card

I'm a greencard holder. My company is sending me back to my home country, China, to work a short time, less than 6 month. The company attorney said there is no need to contact the INS since I'll work less than 183 days and I have green card. My concern is that the job may extent longer than that and I'll be in trouble, even lose my resident status in the worse case. The lawyer said I can come back to visit during the time I work there, so the record will show I'm not staying over 6 months each time I'm outside U.S. Will this work? Anyone has similar experience or knowledge on this, your advice will be greatly appreciated.

If stay is more than 6 months, the you may need to apply Re-entry permit.
you will have added advantage if the company in china is a US company branch.

re-entry permit is needed for trips of more than a 1 year long and less than two. On your way back to the States have a letter from your US company handy that it was a business trip and that you are still employed with them and maintain residency in the States. Have all the proof of your residency (State ID, utility bills, property, bank accounts, family, etc) with you. :)
