Question about traveling with H1B

I have H1B visa stamped in my passport which is expired. But I have H1B visa extension approval notice with me. My question is

Can I travel without stamping new H1B visa to my passport? I want to avoid visit to US consulate in India?

My I140 and I-485 are pending with INS. Do I have any other option without loosing my H1B status until my GC is approved?

I would appreciate your replies.
