Question about traveling overseas for GC holder(my mother)

Hello,

My mother has a green card living in the States. She does not work. I'd like to ask a question whether it's okay for her to be out of the States for the reason of helping me out with my pregnancy/post pregnancy. I want her to stay here in Japan with me for max 90 days which she's allowed to stay, and go to S.Korea for a few weeks and come to Japan again to help me with post pregnancy after my baby's born. So maybe in total 6-9 months outside of US in a year.
Do you think it would be fine when she returns back to the States?Would the immigration officer let her pass easily? I need to add that my mother cannot really speak English so I'm worried about this.

Thank you in advance.

From what (little) I know about Japan and other countries that allow people of certain countries to stay up to 90 days, they usually don't let you back in again after you've spent 90 days (or almost 90 days) in their country, unless you spend 3-6 months elsewhere before attempting to enter again. So I doubt that plan to have her spend a short time in S. Korea then go back to Japan will work. But maybe I'm wrong and you know different based on your experience with Japan.

They'll probably let her in if she doesn't have any other long absences outside the US, but if they realize that she's been gone for over 6 months, her entry probably won't be easy.

Thank you for replying Jackolantern.
One question, do you know why it's okay for some people to stay out of the US for more than 6 months and some people not? Does it depend on their reason they tell to the officer? I'm confused because in some other posts they were out of the States for almost a year and said they haven't had a problem.

I'd need to ask the immigration in Japan about the 90+90 days stay. Thank you for advising me :)

With some people, they get away with staying out for 10-11 months because the POE officer simply didn't look far enough in the system to realize the individual was gone for more than 6 months.

Other people have a reentry permit which gives permission to stay away for up to 2 years, so they rarely get hassled if the trip is far under 2 years.

Have mom file an I-131 for a re-entry permit and she can be out of the U.S. for an extended period as decsribed in the re-entry permit. Also, see the form instructions.
