Hi all,

I am planning to file my N400 in january. It looks like 8-10 months wait in a row? what is the rough time line to receive the US Passport finally?

I am wondering, can I travel abroad while N-400 is pending. How it will affect the processing?

Other question I have is, do I need anything like advance parole or something?

All your input will be highly appreciated.

Good luck to everyone

Its hard to predict future N-400 processing times due to the massive backlog caused by the fee hikes last June. Some USCIS sources are suggesting as long as 15-18 months processing time, but of course, individual SCs and DOs will vary as usual.

The passport itself can usually be had anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months after sending in your natz certificate. Depends whether you pay for expedited processing or not.

Yes you can travel, just be aware that you must maintain all your N-400 eligibility criteria up until you actually take the oath.

No - you remain a GC holder until you finish taking the oath.

thank you boatbod

thanks a lot for the info.

Once N400 is approved, what is the next step? applying for US passport?

Once your N400 is approved, while waiting for the US passport what will be the travel restriction.

Sorry that too many questions. Sometime, it may be critical that travel cannot be postponed during the waitin period for the US passport what is the option.

Thanks in advance

Notify social security (they need to see your natz cert). Apply for passport.

Basically you can't travel, because you'd need the US passport to reenter the country. There are potentially ways around this, but the best solution is either to expedite the passport (2-3 weeks) or make a personal visit to one of the regional passport offices (1-2 days). If that is not possible, there are even passport agents who will make the trip to the passport office on your behalf ($$$).

Hi, I can not start a new thread so...

I am traveling this weekend to Canada. I am not worry for missing interview or something like that because it will be a short trip. Since I already sent my N-400 application, on my interview day I just should mention to the IO about my trip and I will be fine? Or I should do something else (like filling a form or add my trip somewhere) before/on the interview?

Thanks for your help, Cl.
