Question about translation

Hi Fellow DVers,

I live in the Netherlands, however I was born in another country and do need to translate The birth and police certificates. However, certified translation are pretty much only available into dutch, not English

So my question is, since I'm doing CP in Amsterdam, is it OK if i translate the documents into Dutch? or is it absolutely necessary that the translation be in English?

I recommend asking the U.S embassy/consulate in Amsterdam if they accept the translation in Dutch. Each embassy might have different policies on the language of translations that they accept.

English is always the acceptable language translation but since the U.S consular in the embassy/consulate in each country can speak the native language, they might accept it. Then again, confirm this with them.

Keep in mind, maybe you need the birth certificate later in the US. I would recommend to translate the papers into english.

I agree with Tazmania: Since you already have to spend money on getting a translation, you might as well get it done in a language in which you will need it later (instead of having the documents translated twice).

For AOS, you can translate by yourself and ask your friends to attest it. Doesn't CP work that way too ?

I dont think so because without license you cant translate documents. If I am not wrong you have to provide your licence no. name and address of office in the document you translated. and after that have to notarise the documet which has been translated.
