Question about "Statutory Period"

Does anyone know how long it is and exactly what period of time is included in this "statutory period"?
 
The statutory period for your naturalization begins five years prior to the filing date of your application for naturalization (N-400) and continues until the time of your naturalization (oath date).

I was confused because I read it somewhere that the Statutory Period is 3 years if you are filing for Citizenship based on marriage to US Citizen. Any truth to that?
 
Statutory period is 5 years when applying under 5 year rule, and 3 years when applying under 3 year rule.
 
Could someone refer me to any website to get detail infi about STATUTORY PERIOD.I googled it but could not find anything on detail.
