Question about port of entry

Hi There,

I am a DV 2009 lottery winner who's temporary visa date of entry is valid until the 25th of December 2009. Obviously this is then valid for 12 months.

I am trying to stay in the UK until the 26th to spend Christmas with my family and as such am looking for ways to validate my temporary visa to allow me to enter after the valid date in my passport.

I am heading to New York for a wedding at the end of August (for a weekend) and was wondering if anyone could tell me if the following scenario was possible or potential trouble:

1. Enter the US and have over immigration forms etc in August.
2. Following the wedding return to the UK until after Christmas.
3. In the meantime, Greencard is received at my listed US address and then forwarded on to me in the UK
4. December 26th/27th, enter the US using my mailed Greencard having been out of the country for four months.

I don't know what the deal is with travelling without the Greencard so that is a concern...

I hope someone can help me and please let me know if you need more info!

Thanks everyone...

u will b fine. dont worry. just come and activate the green card and leave. And come back b4 aug 2010.

petmum,
If he is going back for more than six monthes, he should get a re-entry primit isn't?

bindy81: I certainly hope that what you have described is possible (and my understanding is that it's all fine) because that's pretty much what I'm planning too. I am planning to head to the US in November for a week or two then come back and spend Christmas/New Years with family and have my friend in the US (who's address I am using for my green card) courier my actual green card to me. Then, I will return to the US for my proper move early next year.

Also, even without the physical green card - once the visa in our passports is stamped, that acts as equivalent to the physical green card for up to a year and apparently we can travel on it just like we will with the physical green card. So even if something goes wrong receiving the physical green card, we should still be able to reenter the US using that and reapply for a new physical green card if worst comes to worst.

tage: The re-entry permit is only needed if we are away for more than 1 year but it is generally accepted that we should expect a few more questions if we are away for between 6 months and year about what we have been doing. For trips away from the US of less than 6 months it is apparently pretty rare that the customs officers will bother asking many questions.
