Hello everyone!

I have started to fill out the N-400 form and stuck on part 10, question #7: HAVE YOU EVER BEEN DECLARED LEGALLY INCOMPETENT OR BEEN CONFINED TO A MENTAL INSTITUTION?

Here is my story. I was in a mental institution when I tried to commit a suicide. Well, I was taken to the emergency room to get some stiches but after that I was moved to the mental hospital where I stayed for a few days. I wasn't against it.

What should I answer to this question? Yes, and bring some kind of a paper from the doctor? Or no, since it was volunteerly?

Confined to a mental hospital means against your will by a legal process, not by your own free will. In your case, you would answer NO the the question.

You don't seem to be Mental!, it is just the treatment you have received for your temporary illness. The question is about being "declared" mental. You can not declare yourself, it is the certified authorities, doctors who has to decide your mental capabilities. Visiting a doctor in a mental institution is not confinement. it is nothing but consulting a doctor. Your answer is "No"

I read the answers to number 7 of Part 10 on N-400

I understand that while the person is aware of been taken to a mental hospital with her/his consent, it is not considered relevant.
Therefore, that person can mark (NO) on question # 7 of Part 10. However, it will be wise that the person takes with him/her the doctor and hospital's papers that explain his/her case to the interview.

If somebody had been in that case and the outcome was good, please share your experience.

Sincerely,
Vallejo
