Question about lost Natz Certificate

I just got a "frantic" call from a friend of mine. She can't find her Natz Certificate anywhere and doesn't know what to do. Since this is not a familiar subject for her I told her I would ask on here.

Can you request a replacement for a Natz Certificate

Does she need a notarized copy of a lost of stolen certificate?

What does she need to do and how much will it cost and take to apply for one ?

Oh she is going to have a cow ...... $380 for what ?????

Anyways. I just looked at the form and it says check either this or that.

Does she need to check

New Certificate of Citizenship or New Certificate of Naturalization ?

Also, does it need to be notarized ? How long does it take to get the replacement and last question (I hope) does it look the same.

Oh and other question. It says USCIS Office or Name of Court. So whereever she was handed the Natz Document she has to write that down right ? Is that listed on the Natz Certificate.

Well I know what I do as soon as I get mine. I go down to JAG and get several notarized copies of the Natz Certificate.

This will not help the OP, but when you get your NC take some black and white copies of it and store the original somewhere very safe eg bank deposit box.

What is a OP ? LOL

OP is Original Poster.

It can take upto a year to get duplicate :( I know it is sad. That is what their site says. I don't know why it should take that long and why it should cost that much.
She needs certificate of Naturalization (Not citizenship)
It should look the same except photo (which she will send now) I believe.

Everyone should make copies of cert and store it safe. They need not be notorized (I believe) since you can not use those copies anywhere except to send to USCIC when requesting duplicate for lost copy. Using them anywhere in place of original is prohibited anyway. Basically the copy will help them find her records faster.

If she has US passport, there is no need for her to panic. Passport should work at all places where Nat cert it needed. Passport is a good enough proof that she is citizen. Why is she so worried? Does she not have US passport yet?

So when you apply for a Passport why can't you sent a notarized copy of your Ntz Certificate in instead of the original. I mean what if the lose it and what really get's me is the fact that they send your passport back seperatly from your Natz Certificate.

They have to check original for passport since photocopies can be forged. By the way, in reality, Notary are not supposed to validate photocopies. They only can say that person who signed on a piece of paper is same person that it says as they checked his ID and he signed infront of them. They are not allowed to say that one piece of paper (photocopy) is same as another. Which is why sometimes, they make you sign on the copy and they validate that signature.

I agree with your fear of them losing it. My Nat cert came back almost 12 days after the passport and I was scared. Good thing is, I had my passport by then and also photocopy of Nat cert (in case I need duplicate) Usually you receive both fine so as I am told often by people, start worrying about things when they happen to you instead of before ;-)

It is not so much worrying. It is more wondering and curiosity how things work.

That's good to hear. :) I didn't mean to imply you are worried.

In my case, I was very worried when my Nat cert did not show up for more than 10 days after passport. Everybody I talked to, told me they received it in 2-3 days after passport. Was so relieved when mine showed up finally.
Now a days, they scan all information and send to a different facility to print and mail passport. Once that facility informs passport office that passport has been mailed, earlier office mails the Nat cert. Since passport comes via Priority mail and Nat cert via regular, there is a possible delay. That is what I came to know when I had called passport office asking about certificate.

So what happens if THEY lose it. Who is reliable ? Can you make them pay for a replacement or ...

P.S. I know you didn't imply that I was worried.
