Following means after 1/11/2010. However you can try to do a walkin at your local asc.

If you choose to walk in, does it have to be a specific day of the week? Why is Wednesday specified on the FP letter?
Because theoretically Wednesday is the slowest day for them.

I am not so sure about this. They might be keeping Wednesday relatively open to account for walk-ins.

I need help. I have received FP letter and FP date is 1/5/2010. On seeing this thread, I understand one can go for walk-in service any day any time prior to that.
I talked to their 1800 number; they said one can go there only with prior appointment and no walk-ins. Reschedulement is possible only for a later date and not prior to appointment date.
My FP appointment is at their Hicksville ASC, NY and notice says if I cannot make it then I can go there on any following wednesday at the same time.
Can anyone guide how to make use of the walk-in service prior to the appointment date since I shall be out of town and do not want to delay this.

It definitely doesn't hurt to walk in....
I did it in Pittsburgh PA almost a month before appointment and the were completely empty and gladly accepted me...
And it was not a Wednesday (even though the invite said to come in any following Wednesday...)
So give it a try... it will probably also speed up your interview date as it did for me.
