The F-1 visa is the student visa which can be used only for studies in US. You can apply for social security number after entering US. You also can take up off campus or in campus work as well. You have the F-2 category.Dependent spouses and children(unmarried, under 21 years old) of F-1 student visa holders with the F-2 dependent visa are allowed to enter into the U.S. but cannot work full time in US.
