question about employment

hi all,

I recently got my GC, and I have been offered an opportunity to work as a contractor for my current firm. I know, it's surprising - something about saving benefits and the like for them. Ofcourse, all sort of required documents will be offered if I decide to do that. According to them, it would shield me from any possible salary adjustments etc etc.

Suffices to say it's being told by people powerful enough within the co.

what do you think? will this cause any problem? I'm in consulting, so how does it play out? is there an INS guideline for this?

thanks Joe,

just a few more clarifications : I would be contracting through some small firm they have an agreement with for people converted like this. they say the savings in benefits offered outweigh the small overhead they pay, like.

I would be released from all previous contractual obligations with the firm, and htis new agreement would be put in place.

Still, in paper I would not be an 'employee' of the firm any more. Now, how much time should I buy before this new thing is imposed? As I hear, there is a rumor going on about paycuts (even for people firmly in consulting assignments already), and this might shield me from them for the time being. OTOH, I would not want it to look like a no-goodfaith effort to be employed with my current employer.
