Hi All,

I'm currently holding H1B working for the education system of a state (non profit, government). I am thinking of going to Canada (Toronto) for a short vacation to get my visa stamped there. Could I do that, and is there a possibility that I could not come back to the US? What are the things that I need to prepare for my trip?

I'm pretty clueless about this, so any helps are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Unless you are a Canadian or have already had an H1B stamping in your home country, you need to check the consulate website to see if they will accept a third country national COS applicant.

There is always a risk in this. What if the consulate requests a name check for you and that takes up more than six months? Then you will need to leave Canada as well. Someone in my extended family got the short end of the stick on this one. Stayed in Canada for 6 months and then had to wait for another 4 months in Pakistan before his background check was complete.

Could I do that, and is there a possibility that I could not come back to the US?

What is that name check? When I applied for F1 Visa back in my country, I did not have to go through that name check.

So Apart from that name check, I'm pretty safe?

Oh btw, I came here thru F1 then got my H1B processed here. I'm working for the state (government - non profit).

Thanks
