Question about continuous residency

So, my family applied for green cards back when I was about 13/14 years old. We finally got approved in 2004, when I was 21 years old and had one year left on my degree.

I came to the US with my Father for 2 or 3 weeks in September of 2004, to begin the 'moving countries' process. It was at this time that I actually physically acquired my green card. My father owned a property in the US which we intended to move into. He returned to the US in November of 2004, again for 2 weeks, then again in January 2005 and has stayed here since, living in the property he owns.

I did not return to the US until August of 2005, but (aside from a few short vacations) have been here since.

I know that usually, leaving for 6-12months 'breaks' continuous residency, but I have two questions:

1) If I assume continuous residency WAS broken, when do I start counting again? Is it from the first day back in the US (in August 2005), or can I count the time I was out of the US, since it's less than a year?

2) Since my father essentially remained here continuously during my absence, and since I was only staying abroad to complete my studies, is it possible that I did not actually break my continuous residence?

It would be very helpful for my husband if I was able to apply for citizenship now, rather than in a year's time, so any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
