Question about 485 and He, pls help

Hi, I hope I could get some help from someone. I am facing an issue now. My wife and I submitted I485 in March, 1999. She was
a F-1 student then. In a few weeks, her F-1 status will expire. Does she need to apply for a H-4? If not, what status will she have
before 485 get approved? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
