Q: Traffic citation and defensive driving class

Hi folks,

I just received a copy of my driving record from the state. There are no citations in the record. However I know that I had received a speeding ticket once which I was able to erase by taking a defensive driving class. I did not pay any ticket to the court. Does this count as a citation for question 17 in the N400? Or does citation mean a ticket for which I had to pay fees to the court?

Thanks a lot.

traffic ticket is a citation. period.

however, i know someone would come to suggest you for "nothing to worry about it".

after all, it is your n-400 form and it is up to you if you want to put it down or not.

how did you receive a copy of your driving record

in CA, I scheduled an appointment to DMV. I filled out a form and they issued my past 3 yrs driving records while I was waiting.

For State of MI, I mailed a request and fee to them and they issued the driving records.

For State of GA, I mailed a notaried request and fee to them and they issued the driving records to me.

And yes, I currently hold a CA driver license, and I previously held driver license from MI and GA.

By the way, I did most (if not all) people did. I researched the DMV for a specific state, and I found out info, and I called them to verify.

it is very helpful if you start doing your own research (not just ask questions) on your question. you will find so much helpful information out there.

You are best adviced to state every citation you received ... it also does not hurt (nor benefit, I guess) if you attach a written explanation to your answer and explain why your citation does not appear in your driving record.
We attached a written explanation for a citation my wife received ... she had a 'reason' for the traffic violation and the incident was dismissed in court. At the end of her statement she empasized that she was never arrested or detained by a law enforcement or immigration officer. The only reason we added that sentence because she felt kind of bad to answer 'YES' on this cited/arrested/detained question. Nevertheless we listed this (her only) citation in the N400 form. It didn't come up at all during the interview ... you'd also expect that the immigration would be interested in greater issues, would you not?

Alex.
