purpose of having a sponsor

My husband hasn't made enough money this past year to sponsor my GC, my friend is wanting to do it but isn't sure everything that it entails. They read over the I-864 forms and said they are worried about what they're responsibility would be to be.

I've already explained to them that USICS needs proof that I won't become a public charge.

Does anyone have any advice on what tell them to help better explain it to them.

IMO, they would be extremely foolish to take on this obligation for just a friend. It is more than co-signing a loan. The US government has far more options to collect, and there is no limit to the amount that your sponsor could be resposible to repay.

Tell your husband to get another job or use other assets to offset income requirements.

I do not plan or intend on becoming a public charge, so could the government come after them for anything other than that?

Sponsor is only responsible financially if you become public charge.

I don’t think even if you become public charge government will come after them. But if you become public charge it will be problem during citizenship. But I really don’t know that. If government wants then they can do it anyway because they have lot of resources.

Usually people don’t plan to become public charge. But no one can guaranty in future someone won’t become public charge.
Forget about normal people even government financially helped biggest banks and car makers in the world.

All the best

No.

And their financial obligation ends when you become a US citizen or have worked and paid into Social Security for 10 years (including any years you have already paid into the system before becoming a permanent resident, while working legally or illegally in the US). If you become a public charge after either of those events, your sponsor won't be liable. And it is not every government benefit that makes you a public charge; you can collect unemployment benefits or hurricane relief or emergency medical assistance without being considered a public charge.

What about your own income? If you already have legal employment within the US, which is reasonably expected to continue after your green card is approved, you can add your income to your husband's income, and that total may be enough to avoid your friend being a co-sponsor.
