PROs/CONs for having Travel document

Folks, my national (non-US) passport is about to expire. I am a GC holder. I have a choice to renew my national passport or applying for Travel document.

Get a re-newed passport will cost me twice as for applying for a Travel document. Also, next year, I am eligible to apply for US Citizenship.

Is it worth to spend more money for securing a new passport ? Any disadvantages (other than known limitation for visa/traveling to the other countries)for applying/having for Travel document during US Citizenship process?

Thank for your help.

Just curious - what would you do in the interim if you need to travel back to your homecountry in an emergency?

Yes, it is always a good idea to have a travel doc of some kind at all times, just in-case. I am surprised that your NP costs twice as much as an RTD. I thought the RTD was the most expensive travel doc of all time, hehe.

I say, it depends on your nationality that you are holding. I assume you are from a schengen country or from GB. Pound value is double a dollor. NP costs more than RP, WOW.
RP is a good document to show you tie to the US. Valid only for two years where you passport usually is valid at least for 5 years.

I hope you are not Refugee/Asylee and that might make a difference.

Some countries won't accept RP. Dubai is one of them.

*RP=Re-entry Permit
*NP=National Passport

Even with the current exchange rate, no European passport costs that much. So, unless he's travelling a LOT, and if his country allows dual citizenship, I suggest he apply for a passport and not an RP. But, yes, he could be a refugee/asylee.
