Proof of Citizenship

Hi,

My daughter has arrived in the US as a permanent immigrant 2 years ago and we've already obtained a US passport for her based on the Child Citizenship Act.
She's only 4.

Is the passport a sufficient proof of US citizenship? Or do we have to apply for a certificate of citizenship as well.

Regards,

Hussein

Hey...i believe that b/4 you obtained her passport, you submitted other required documents needed to get the passport. I don;t think you need to apply for certificate. American passport should be okay and serve as a proof. Read the reasons to become a US. Citizenship. To carry a US passport should be among them. I believe she was born here (US)?
Hope this helps?

The US passport is a sufficient proof of US citizenship and you do not have to file N-600. But since you or/and your spouse have a US passport(s) and certificate(s) of naturalization your daughter might benefit from having two proofs of citizenship as well. There is no rush and no time limit when to file for her certificate, now or later, or when she grows up and can file one for herself.

While a passport is sufficient proof of US citizenship, if you can afford it I'd recommend getting naturalization citizenships via N600 for the children too as a backup. My opinion is that it gives you a second document that can be quickly produced if the passports are otherwise lost, stolen, or misplaced. Thus it would sort of act as a "US birth certificate" for naturalized citizens, just like regular US citizens have an actual US birth certificate and passports.

Also inform Social Security Administration so that their files show that the children are US citizens. Basically the more agencies that have a record of citizenship the better, since at least USCIS apparently have been known to lose files.

Passports expire and sometimes get lost or stolen while traveling. A certificate of citizenship doesn't expire, and may be kept in safe storage until needed.

The passport is however much quicker and easier to get, probably because USCIS isn't involved.

The certificate of citizenship will become her new "birth certificate". It is like a "belt and suspenders" but It is better to have all corners covered.
