I think people took wrong the word I used before " second hand citizen", what I tried to do is to use an old word that I heard time ago by a person from the conservative wing of this country at the time to talk about people who became citizen in this country after 5 years of being legally resident in this country. Is there other word that can be used to describe us then?..I don't feel like we will get all the real recognition by all the people that was born here as citizens, specially from Ultra conservative people.

By the way, LusiKs....your Governor still have the Austrian citizenchip, he has de USA-Austrian nationality...how u call that then?.. . Also, I'm pretty sure that at least 90% of all asylees after they become citizens will keep renewing their country passports and that includes people that came to this country by other ways, family petitions, H1B visas , etc, well... for me then, is not like a complete citizenship, is a split one, should they be called second hand??..who knows...but is different and that's for sure.

Regarding, work..u are right wantmygcnow u can work in federal institutions..no doubt about it...but regarding NASA I don't think so. I lived in Houston and I even applied for a job there. U have to be a citizen to actually work there. U can work for companies that do services to the NASA but not in the NASA by itself.

Changing topics.... in theory Lusiks..if people come to this country they should feel secure and confident of their cases and of the freedom that this country is offering them. I know is hard for people, even me , that still waiting for my gc, to feel secure because you still have the nightmares that your case will be open again or something like that...but people need to be secure and confident that it won't happen. There are laws that protects asylees. There are State laws that say that if you have a process pending in the INS, for more than 4 years,in this case for adjustment of status GC, u automatically become a permanent resident of this country there's no way they can kick u out, u are a resident already but you don't have the plastic card..and that's all unless u do a crime or something like that. Every State has protection laws for people with pending change of status, it depends only of years of waiting for the State to consider you a permanent resident. That's my understanding. What is a fact is that many asylees are missinformed.

Well that's what I heard time ago when U have a pending application for so much time. It doesn't have to be asylee adjustment only, it can be anything. Everything prescribes after 4 ( or 5 , not sure) years in all States so in theory, if u apply for adjustment and U haven't heard back that means u are ok. You have your feet completely in this country. Laws are complex and everybody wants to see them the way they want. I want to see it that way....what u think? . Regarding those 4 or 5 years it makes sense..because even in cases that are taken to court there's a time limit for litigation. For example, if u have been attacked by someone and U don't sue this person, the case will prescribe after 4 years, it won't proceed. Same with fraud cases and stuff liek that. That's what I understand also with immigration. That after some years..kabum!!!! U can't be kicked out.

Dear ayyubov,

Obviously we have different ideas about achievements. Sorry to see that yours are all correlated only to the amount of money you earn.

I was talking about more than just paying your bills and travelling once a while. Yes, for doing this it doesn't matter who you are. While being an asylee doesn't bother you, it is still a fact that you are not a full member of this society. Potentially something may change tomorrow, your asylee status can be revoked and you will be nobody with no life perspective. And please don't tell me that when you come back to US from one of your trips INS officer at the airport treats you the same way as a US citizen? This is just one of the examples of how far are we from being considered a full society member, but for me only this is making all the fighting worth. I'd like to go to a vacation and come back as a normal person without going through secondary checkpoint and answering 100 stupid questions asked by an officer who hardly speaks English and has an IQ that is many times lower than mine and in the best case has a mediocre knowledge of US Immigration Law.

I am talking about getting what we are entitled to by the US legislation - permanent residency card in REASONABLE timeframe and US citizenship 4 years after that. I am talking about BEING EQUAL to normal citizens.
That is the least achievement that I set for myself. Having a MBA degree, good job and fancy car do not bring me closer to this goal.

I never sais that I don't wanna become PR. What I'm saying is that it's hard to change anything (this is just my opinion). An example could be the last settlement. I hope I'm not right but this is a reality.

Doing something is better than doing nothing. So giving out your faxes/letters/emails to your senaters and D.C.

While live here I achieved a lot already. I'm going for my master, I have a very good job, house, family, car. I travel once a year anywhere I want (well almost anywhere). Bieng an asylee doesn't bother me. Thats my point. You won't become richer or poorer by getiing green card. It's just a matter of time. I know a lot of citizens who can't even pay their bills and their status don't help them at all.
But you are in a temporary status compared to someone with a green card. That is why my green card has the word "permanent" on it. Considering the fascist Congress we currently have, I would be worried about what may happen to you since you are not a "permanent resident." Someone may say that asylees are protected by a UN treaty and I would respond by saying that the current Congress and the current president look down at the UN and see it as a failing bureaucracy so they won’t honor anything it espouses. Think also of how many years you will have to wait to vote. Voting is the best right Americans have and you will not have it for 15 + years. In short, your life is in hold and that is so un-American. I was in your position for a perioid of 11 years and I hated it.

Thanks shamshon, I see there is at least one person on this thread who gets it.
Exactly - our lives are on hold until we get a PR and then citizenship.

And for the record, Arizona_poet - you are fairly new to this forum, so spend some time and read some previous threads. Last thing you could say about people on this forum is that they are "misinformed". You would be amazed at the level of knowledge of Immigration laws that many of the members have, which I think is great. What we are doing here is following all the news and changes, even potential changes in immigration field that would affect us, and keeping each other informed. We are not discussing theory here, we are dealing with reality.

And I would strongly suggest to not use that term again - "second hand citizen". Arnold may have 10 other citizenships, but it doesn't mean that his american citizenship is "second hand". This is really an un-american way of thinking. And if we ourselves think this way, can we expect US-born americans to respect us?

I have to agree. Maybe I'm just not a good figther. We need to fight for our rights because this whole situation is pissing me off. But I don't think that US lawmakers can send asylees home or somewhere else, that is too much. Tell me what to do and where to call I'll do it. Thank you for good explanation.
