Can someone tell me how do I go about cancelling my Indian passport? Just a photocopy of my US Passport along with the Indian passport and a letter should work? do I need to send any fee's to the Indian embassy?

Thx :)

You would send your Indian passport to the Indian consulate who would stamp it as "cancelled". Call the Indian consulate nearest you for details.

I live in Atlanta, and got my Indian passport cancelled at the Visa Camp. But when we applied for the OCI, we sent both the US passport and cancelled Indian passport to the Consulate.

Indian Passport Act NOW requires that holder of Indian passport MUST surrender the passport to the nearest Indian Embassy/Consulate at abroad if holder acquires the nationality of another country. Otherwise possession of the passport would be considered unauthorized and shall constitute an offence under Indian Passport Act 1967.

That's why Indian Consulates around the world do post this warning on an Indian passport issued at abroad. I'm sure some people might have different experiences in this regard, but in most cases Indian Consulates do keep the Passport than sending back to the person after cancellation.

Johnny, not sure where you got that info but the passport is returned to the holder after it is cancelled. Never heard that consulates hold onto a passport sent for cancellation when an applicant has dual nationality. I have personally seen atleast a handful of cases where the passport is returned after getting the cancellation stamp.

The usual practice for most indians who acquire US Citizenship is go to the indian consulate to apply for Indian visa or OCI. In the same visit give them the old indian passport, they will stamp canceled and return the passport to you.

I think you were not able to read the last text of my above posting. I did say very clearly that some people's experiences might have been different than what I know and have seen. And I also said that some Indian consulates do return the passport after cancel it up.

Nevertheless, the basis of my above said statement came directly from seeing passports, of at least 80 Indian citizens, by my own eyes, which were issued by Indian Consulate in NY within the last few years until just a day ago one. These people have either renewed their passport or applied a new one. And each of these passports does contain the warning about surrendering of passport if holder acquires another nationality. Further, I've spoken to Consulate General of India in NY 3 yrs ago about this matter who provided me the said information.

Once again Johnny, I am not sure what are you referring to but I read your email clearly. The standard statement by Indian consulates is that "you must surrender" but I have never seen anybody's passport confiscated / retained by the embassy in case of obtaining dual citizenship.

As Johnny says, the Indian passport "must be surrendered" to an Indian consulate/embassy when the holder acquires another country's citizenship.
But, the process the consulate/embassy follows after that is that they stamp "cancelled" and return it back.

That may be the case now, after the NRI and OCI came into being. Prior to this, during the last few decades, Indian passports were never returned back and most former Indian citizens never bothered to get their passports cancelled either. I know many former Indian citizens who either never returned their Indian passport, or if they did, never got it back from the consulate with the 'Cancelled' stamp on it.

What is the status of your US passport? I know your Oath was a day before mine. So I'm assuming that you have already applied for the passport.
