PR through Asylum: attorney said I should use RP instead of RTD?

I obtained my green card through political asylum and just received my refugee travel document. However, I just spoke with an immigration attorney to prepare for my citizenship application and he said I should have applied for reentry permit instead.

I thought that I was right, RTD (+GC) is the document that I should use for traveling outside of US (not to my home country) for the purpose of vacation, only for a brief period. Can someone please clarify?

Thanks in advance.

you could have used either one.

you can continue to apply for and use RTD even after you obtained GC through asylum, but it would be wise for you if you just apply for RP because it is valid for 2 years where as the RTD is valid for just one year and is an inferior to RP in the eyes of consular officers when applying for visas.

On the other hand with RTD you don't need a Visa for some european countyries like: Germany, Croatia, Slovakia, Hungary and a few other. With RP you will need to aply for visas almost anywhere and a few countries don't accept it period....
