Related transcript question...

I think this question is related, but feel free to let me know if I am mistaken... :D

I have my interview soon and called up the IRS to get a 1722 for my 2003 return. They said it wouldn't be available for another 4-6 weeks as my return has not been processed yet...

Now, my interview letter says "If you have taken trips outside the US for more than 6 months since becoming a PR, please bring an original IRS Letter 1722 for the past 5 years"

I have 1722 letters for years 1998-2002, but is it OK if I tell my interviewing officer that it was too soon to obtain the 2003 letter?

Will bringing 1998-2002 letters be enough to qualify as "past 5 years"?

FYI, my trip for more than 6 months was in early 1998, not in the last 5 years that apply to my naturalization qualification period...

Thanks!

Don't worry too much. My friend who went for the interview and got it, never bothered about 1722. He just took the copies of his 1040. The officer never bothered to ask for them

Its fine if you dont have 03 returns. The CIS adjudicators are taxpayers too and know you dont get the transcripts that fast. If you feel its necessary take your tracking slip / efile conf number and a copy (if u have it ) of the return u filed. Maybe you can ask the IRS and your state to give a letter saying you owe no back taxes. Its very unlikely CIS will want to see your 03 return unless you moved or had tax arrears before

Thank you.

Ak500:
Bottomline, you DON'T have to send tax transcripts with the N-400-unless you want to delay your process.

However, if you have been delinquent with tax filings, not filed taxes in previous years,or had IRS related proceddings against you-you will have to have a letter of explanation, tax transcripts yada yada.

You WILL need the tax transcripts during the interview process even though it may not be explicitly clear (for some applicant categories).

FYI - I just called IRS and talked to a very polite customer service representative. I requested an IRS 1722 letter for the past 5 year status, and it was typed up while I was on hold. I was told I should be receiving the letter within 5 business days. :D :D :D
