Hi all,
I am getting ready to file my N400 and have had 2 speeding tkts and 1 parking violation since my arrival in the US.
I have the court orders of tkt dismissals and paid up fines. However my attorney says that I need a police/sheriff "clearance" also from the towns that I lived in when these violations took place.
Any idea how we get a hold of those?
thanks in advance.

Had interview 3 weeks ago. I have answered NO to the question cited/convicted. At the interview, I have asked for correction from NO to YES and provided court disposition letters. Thats all she asked..

If the speeding tickets are less than $500 you dont need to be worried.

There are plenty of questions in the forum...and there is a sticky note..read those.

Is your lawyer filing your case? It's totally overkill to get the police records for where the traffic tickets were issued.

I have had a speeding ticket back in 2004. I decided to attached copies (available on county's website of records) of court disposition with my N400 and that I paid fines. My attorney told me that it was unnecessary because it was older than 5 years. So police clearance sounds like an other extreme.

I agree it does sound extreme to me too......should I tell my lawyer that I won't do it

At the very least ask your lawyer why he's suggesting this eventhough the application instructions state documentation is not needed for minor traffic tickets and if it's his experience that applicants who did not provide police records for minor traffic tickets were denied citizenship.

I agree I was reading in the naturalization "guide" as follows...........

Note that unless a traffic incident was
alcohol or drug related, you do not need to submit documentation for traffic fines and
incidents that did not involve an actual arrest if the only penalty was a fine less than
$500 and/or points on your driver’s license.

In my humble opinion, you can fire your lawyer....lol!!! It is a total overkill, unless the cases involves some DUI or weed under the car seats, speeding tickets are common. However, make a best decision which you will feel you can sleep with...

so this is what i've learnt regarding speeding tickets so far............ according to USCIS, if the traffic offences are "minor", not involving drug or alcohol and less than $500 no proof is neccessary

anyway i've put the question to my attorney since it was the paralegal who was asking me to do this; see what he says
