My wife had a citizenship interview 3 days ago. She passed the exam and everything went well but the officer told her that her fingerprints didn't go through the system so she had to get a police clearance report from every city we lived in the last 5 years. do we need to get the report from the local police stations in every city we lived in. We lived in MI and TN states.
Or we need state police clearance reports. Would appreciate any response.

I thought you wouldn't get the interview unless your FP are cleared?????

Not necessarily. Although USCIS has implemented a policy a while back to schedule an interview only once all the background checks are done, that doesn't mean they cannot send interview notice and even conducting the interview prior to all these checks. This amended policy was made as matter of interim policy with USCIS than as a matter of laws/rules. So obviously, it could be flexible.

And YES, OP's wife must get the Police Clearance Certificate from every place she has lived for the last 5 yrs...at least. This case is not unique to this situation as it does happen now and then...whenever someone's fingerprints are ineligible to read by the system....sometimes some people are born with fingerprints those couldn't be read...(which I was one of them..lol )...There are actually many threads on this topic wherein many members have provided good links and information on how and where to contact to cope with this issue. You might like to do a bit search on it.

Good luck....

If the fingerprints are legible/clear BUT are not cleared by FBI (or whoever else) owing to records hits etc., then it's a different issue, and you may or may not get an interview scheduled.

However, if the prints were not legible for any reason, then USCIS gives one more opportunity to the applicant to get FP done. If the FPs are still not legible the second time, then you don't get a 3rd FP notice. You will just get your interview scheduled and will need to submit police clearances as required at the interview.

The commonly reported problem seems to be that candidates never get told in advance to bring any police clearance documents. They find this out only during their interview.

harlibra: Did your wife already complete two FP attempts?

I've done some research and it appears the consensus is to obtain a police clearance letter from the state, county and city of residence. however, my IO only said city. In fact, I even clarified with him - "do I need to go to the county or city police department", he just said - find out if I live in a city that has a police department - if so, I just need to get that one.
does anyone know what they do with the letter and the naturalization case once they receive it? What, if any, common problems usually arise from this?
do you hear anything from USCIS regarding the final result? Or do you just get an Oath letter.
many thanks!

We just went through this a few months back.
Some say city, some say "state and county".

I talked to a supervisor. He said the best would be City, County and State. All 3 would mean you are fully clear and no issues.

Try for all 3.
