One of my friend came US using B visa at the beginning of this year. He doesn\'t have work permission so he contacted a west coast law firm. After he paid several thousands dollars to the law firm, he got a L1 visa and the lawyer told him that he can work for any employer in US now and he can apply for green card next year by himself! Are those true? It\'s so hard to believe! I just worry about that the lawyer is laying and my friend will be out of status. Please verify those. Thank you for any input.

An L1 visa is intra-company transfer,i.e, the individual must be working for a firm that has offices in the US and another country and must have worked for the firm in the abroad office for atleast the last 12 months before applying for this visa.

I am not sure how your friend could be granted this status or how he would be able join any company or even apply for green card all by himself.

The only thing which I notice is the intent to commit fraud (which is how INS will view this fradulent application for an L1 visa).

Ask him/her to run away from the law firm which did this and talk to somebody else!!!

Lin_Waiter,

Thank you for your information. The fact is that my friend never worked for any such kind of company before he came to US. He was a student and just got a MBA degree before he came here. Yesterday, the lawyer called him that his L1 visa was approved. I believe the lawyer provided some fraud documents to INS and got the L1 visa for my friend but never told him the truth! My God!
