hi all, here goes.. i entered the us with a transit visa when I was 15(i am now 34) that expired shortly afterwards. I went to school here and some college. I have an 11 yr old and just got married 06-21-07YEY!...my husband is currently stationed in guam for the next 2 years(!!!!). Needless to say i could not go with him. I relocated from new york to san diego to live with him ,we were together almost a year before he left(7-27-07) .we filed the AOS end of July in san diego. I moved to el paso texas to be near my mom for support while he is gone. I have read the threads about the interview process and the documents people took so my question is this...I have no ss# so can we still have joint credit cards, etc without a number? I'm still not sure who to ask about the military id...sticky question....thanks to all...

Hi,

godisgoodtome is correct, your husband is the main applicant. you can also have joint account with him even without SSN. Is your husband in the military? Do you have a military ID or you have one now? I think you can apply for SSN (but it is not valid for work type), so that you will be able to get benefits for you or your son/daughter.

thank for the replies! My hubby is in the military and I do not have an i.d.I am almost sure that I need a ss# for that but again, I do not know who to ask. I have read that it is needed but my situation is a bit different. My hubby listed my son as his dependent so he does receive benefits. As for me , I am having a hell of a time finding work, my husband sends me money but it is not enough, any ideas anyone?

Hi again, is your husband in what branch of the military? I guess you could ask Army JAG corps (if he is in the army) if they can help you get a SSN or you could go to a social security office and ask if what kind of documents you need to get one. you cannot get a SSN valid for work yet but you can get SSN to obtain a military card (i think). Also, without SSN that is valid for work, it will be really hard to find work. I think you should also be a dependent by your husband since you dont have work right now.

since you applied for AOS, did you also apply for EAD (work permit)? once you get your work permit, you can get your SSN - and yes, it's valid for work together with your EAD.

You said u entered witha transit visa..I dotn think people who entered with a transit visa can adjust....were u inspected when u entered?

I have been interviewed for my I-485 on August 2nd in Seattle, WA. I have been approved right away by the officer. I just received the approval e-mail today one week later. Am I going to receive a letter before the actual green card? If so, how long? Because I need an approval letter to process my application for school.

I do not have the neccesary doc. to get a ss#. My hubby is in the navy and I am listed as his dependent but they took away almost all of his basic housing allowance since he lives on base, and that iwhat he sends me but it covers the rent only. when we were in san diego he got much more money but it has changed, we did not know it would be like this.

bootneyf, I have one of the three types of transit visa and luckily I can adjust status, my parents are also green card holders. thanx to all for you're replies!!!!

hmm, im not so familiar with the navy. Isnt it that if your husband was stationed in guam he can take you there, with your child (to live with him)? It was posted in this thread earlier if you did apply your EAD, so you can work even if you I485 is still pending? (though there will still be wait time for EAD approval).
