iam dr xyz, from india, preparing for usmle steps,
in the oct 2009 i applied for b1 visa at hyderabad,
I GOT ALL MY DOCUMENTS,
1) cs-exam scheduling permit, exam date&time confirmation letter,request for visa letter from ECFMG,
2)original MBBS DEGREE,USMLE SCORE REPORTS, MY JOB LETTERS, PAY SLIPS.
3)bank statements having enough cash, statement from CHARTERED ACCOUNTANT all originals,
THE THING WHICH I NEGLECTED;;
i hav my brother in usa doing job on h1b visa,
i put NO to the column asking do u hav any relatives in usa. bacas i was told that they will reject visa if i hav relatives there considering me as a potential immigrant.
usually ppl r getting b1 visas easily at hyderabad,
with 2 or 3 questions, and i am not atall worried becas i hav all my documents original.
AT THE interview---
the first 3 questions r cool,4 the question vo asked me do u hav any relatives in usa --i said no, he said r u sure-- i repeated same.
some how they got the record of my brother who had same address as mine, same contact phone numbers, and same date of birth except for years (he is 2 years older).
vo, asked me to wait for a while ,(for 1.5hours)
and interviews again,
in the second phase, they asked all my family details, since grand father, uncles aunts,all cousines their names ages,where do they live, what they d
i said ours is joint family, but i spent most of my studies in hostel since 5th stand.,i hav little contacts with my paternal cousines,i told them all the names corectly, but coming to ages said, we r not close to our patenal cousines due to family problems.
they asked me for 1 hour, iam giving reasonably good answers,(i assume atleast).
they checked my driving lisence, i took it from my vallet, i could see them suspecting even my degree (our mbbs degree has scanned photo which is not clear).
atlast they rejected my application on cause214 b.
I WAS SOO SHOCKED;;
becas,
1)i never ever dreamt of background check for b1 visa
2)all my friends who hav their brother in usa got visa easily(with NO ithe column).
3)i was hurt becas they interviewed me for 1 hour just like interogation-- for a b1 visa for a good person with good cause of visit, with all documents.
LATER,
after all the cryings in the home,
i thought,
my faults or my bad fate was:
1)we r living in same house since 20 years so my brother and me had same permenent adress.
2)when my brother went for visa renual he gave same contact number--which i didnt know
3)both of us hav same birthday in the records, which i didnt remember
few times they asked where us ur previous passport;;
may be they suspected both of us are same ,they asked me to take of my spects (my brother dont hav spects).
i thinkg they r not sure of anything becas ,they asked me do u share ur birthday with any of ur cousines , i replied -i dont know abt my cousines birthdays correctly.
SOOOO AFTER THIS LONG MAIL,
I SEEK UR ADVISE
1)WHAT SHOULD I SAY (yes/no)ABT MY BROTHER IN FORM 156 NEXT TIME,
2)how can i convince that i dont want to stay in usa after my time.

i hav to think of other alternatives for my pg which i cant dream off,
