Dear friends,
I was in US on h1b visa, non-profit university job for 3 years. Suddenly I had to travel to India, due to fathers health emerency. I expect to stay back home for 5-6 months since father is terminally ill. I dont want to leave him like that. Please advice how I can keep my h1b status for next several months? Can I be on unpaid leave/break? I dont expect much problems from my boss, but what is the correct way to do it? I read that h1bs can only get 30 days unpaid leave? Please write with links to official websites if possible. Thanks in advance,

I'm sorry to hear that.
Basically, whatever benefit allowed to US worker should be allowed to H1 worker too. You can take unpaid leave if employer agreed.
THough I could not find it in the word of law, you can find a lot of answer with googling with keyword H1 and "unpaid leave".
