Please help me to evaluate my chance for NIW

Hi all,

I am new to this forum.

Recet Ph.D from top US school;

Will start to work as a full time permanant staff scientist in a top private, non profit research institute;

9 publications (8 of them are 1st author); citation is not so good, total 24. more than half are indepedent citations.

No big memberships. What I have is ACS, Sigma Xi....

I can get around 10 letters, 1 from a top journal editor in chief, 3-4 department chairs in different univs, 1 in state dept of health, 1 in hospital, 1 european famous guy and 2 from my univ.

So how about my chance to go through NIW.

last month my friend got his I-140 approved in 4 weeks, he filed NIW.
he is a post-doc, but 6 years experience, and 17 publications(not all first author).

his strength was that he is working in gene therapy, and his last 3 publications had very good citations(max 50). max impact factor was around 10.

his selling point was that he will prove very useful to medical research because of his gene therapy expertise, and he proved that he was good using his publciations....(good impact factor, very good citation)

so judge your application based on this practical example.
 
i am sorry i may be wrong about his citations, i think all citations for his work totalled to atleat 60, one paper was cited 30 times, ironically this was not his first authorship paper.....i can say he just got lucky..

you stand a good chance but will depend on how your referees write their letters. scan thru these fora to look for suggestions on how to get correct letters for NIW, in particular gpng and honkman have given some good suggestions in the past. That will be critical.

You are definitely right. I am also thinking the word in the ref. letters, which is critical for the petition.

Your chance will also depend how you can show that you are of national interest. For NIW it is not enough to show that you one of the top guys but also the third prong.
