I have a very close friend whose currently doing time on a illegal federal case. He just got pulled by immigration (on a potential removal back to native country). He has been on this country for more than 10 years. Got wife and daughter, etc...We happen to know each other since we were kids back home....

Help Needed:
Would like to help him out by writing a recommendation letter to US Immigration department. I am looking for some recommendations on what to do and/or probably a letter template of this type.

Any help is greatly appreciated and many thanks in advance for any input on this thread.

First things first he needs a good lawyer; as this is not legal advice.
One of the criteria for being eligible for cancellationg of removal, is to be able to prove that you are a person of good moral character for 10 years. Having been convicted, and served time could be an issue in court if the conviction was for a felony. Sometimes good lawyers can negotiate and get a charge reduced from felony to misdemeanor. A measdemeanor doesn't carry as much weight in court. So, that's what the letter should focus on.

thanks

first of all, thanks for the reply...
He no longer has a lawyer. He used to have one before he pleaded guilty. As soon as he started doing time, his lawyer disappeared. Although he's on his own he still believes after he does his 1 year in prison, he is able to fight the deportation case own his own. Based on his jail research, he strongly believes that with letters of recommendation (explaining how good of person he is) coming from close friends, previous jobs and the church he used to visit, he could get a good shot at it and fight for not being deported.

Please let me know what you think. Still looking for a good recommendation letter template. Any advise will be appreciated.

He really needs a good attorney. You are a really nice person but there isn't much you can do for him without the help of an attorney. there are loop holes in u.s immigration and only an experienced attorney knows how to deal with it. it will cost ya alot but it will be worth it.

Its a sad crisis that your friend is doing thru but in his case there is no hope. If your friend has been CONVICTED with an AGGRAVATED FELONY, FELONY or multiple class A misdemeanors that could be upgraded to Federal Felony. He is getting deported. The fact that he has domiciled in this country for over 10 years has no grounds for his relief. Even if he is married to a US Citizen or has US Citizen dependents that means nothing to the Governments prosecutors. IF the judge has any pity on him and his family crisis the prosecutors are going to him hell and challenge any favorable decision that he can possible get, by appealing the judges decision. I have seen this first hand. You will have to get a good attorney and consult with him to see if you have any other options like asylums. Another option depending what country he is from he may be eligable for a postponed or suspended deportation order.

Good luck

Still, the .gov websites can say all these things they can do etc

I got a friend from the UK that has been here illegal for 2 years, he got arrested for domestic violence cause yes he gave his wife a slap but after she beated him up, bite him smashed his head with a cell phone for a long time.

He got 5 months, in court he told the judge " listen, i am here 2 years illegal, please send me back to the UK" and they didnt send him back.

What's up with that ;)

I will post my story later cause i am considered illegal too by law but i didn't choose for it directly
