Plane ticket needed before visa application?

Is it necessary to have a round trip flight ticket before one goes for a visitor visa application at Chennai? The applicant will use the drop box. Does anyone have any experience in this regard? Thanks.

A ticket is NOT a requirement for getting a visa issued in a US consulate in India.
 
Thanks, I understand that a flight ticket is not a requirement, but is it recommended? I am asking because one can show the intention to return if its a round trip ticket?

One can always cancel the round trip ticket and buy a one way ticket later. The consulate is aware of such possibilities and therefore looks for other evidence of intent to return.
