Hi,

I will be becoming a US citizen on November 19th and have started my research on whether I should apply for PIO or OCI. Is there any place they have a comparison between the 2.

Also I understand that it takes sometime to get these. Can I apply for a tourist visa first and then apply for OCI/PIO

Thanks in advance for your help

----------------you can. I prefer PIO that is valid for 15 years and visa may be for 5 years or 2 years.

PIO is valid for 15 years then you need to renew. From Indian consulate NYC one can get PIO in 5-7 days. For Adult above age 16 if stayin India is more than 180 days one need to register with FRRO in India.

OCI is valid for life it takes about 2-3 months. One does not need any registration with FRRO in India.

Here is a detailed chart comparing the two: http://www.immihelp.com/nri/pio-vs-oci.html - and yes, you can apply for the tourist before applying for OCI/PIO.
