Hi all

I'm a US Citizen by birth, both parents Indian, one still indian + green card, the other naturalized.

I originally applied for PIO via mail to the Indian Embassy in New York (i live in CT) :
* notirized copies of:
* my passport
* current and past expired passport of my mother (indian citizen with greencard)
* my drivers license
* my birthcertificate showing parents
* two applications filled in duplicate
* 4 passport photos plus 1 attached to each application
* money order for $385

It was received at the New York City Indian Embassy on Jan 29, on Feb 9 I received it back requesting additional information:
* my original US passport
* fathers passport copy
* proof of address

To which I did send
* my original us passport
* notarized copy of my fathers current US passport
* notarized electric bill for CT address (in parents name since living with them)
* notarized copy of telephone bill for indian address
* all previous items including letter about application they sent requesting more information

The resubmission was delievered via Fedex at the indian embassy on 2/15, and to date have not heard anything back. I have attempted to call the PIO status number numerous times between 2pm and 4pm, but always get the voicemail not setup or a busy signal.

Does anyone have any better way of trying to see what is happening here? In a couple weeks I am going to need my passport to travel to other countries so cannot leave it 'stuck' at the Indian embassy.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Did you sent documents first time via Priority mail or FedEx? Did you send $20 for sending back the documents?

Consul General:
Ambassador Prabhu Dayal

Dr. A.M. Gondane
Fax: (212) 734-4980

Send fax to all the above and let us know the update.

both times were fedex priority overnight, and in the money order was included the $20 for express mail return of documents.

should i send a fax asking for status similar to what i posted above?

do they usually respond quickly?

thanks!

------ write letter with your Name , Online registarion number, address, email, phone number and explain the problem and request for the update of your case. you can post the sample letter here and others or me will help if that is correct. Be polite in contents.MASKA MAROOOO :)

---I don’t think you should expect quick reply from Indian consulate.
thanks!

thanks, this is PIO so there is no online reference #s, and they say 4 day processing.

will write a very polite letter with pertinent information.

would going in person help anything in trying to get my passport back?

------------------------Yes.
---Explain that you have to go out. Or create any filmy scene that should make them Emotional .
(Most of Indians are emotional fools including me)

It took the NY Consulate 5 weeks to issue my PIO card and I called them numerous times, but it is awfully hard to get to speak with a person. When I did manage to speak with someone, I was told they had a backlog. They absolutely did not respond by email. I did send my original US passport with the application and got it back w/o problem. I used USPS priority mail envelop with certified mail additional postage.

I ended up getting my PIO card back 2.5 weeks after it was sent in. I was almost ready to go down to the embassy to get my passport but it came a couple days before I was going to do that.

I didn't go for OCI since it was a much more drawn out process.

papilu1980: I find the OCI to be easier than PIO. Less paperwork and easier. Plus to do not hand over your passport for more than a few hours (if you live in the city)
