PIO card and passport related questions

Hi,

I read the PIO related information on the CGNY website, and have a few questions and was hoping someone here could help me.

I need to travel in the last week of October, and have applied for a US passport through the expedited service last week, and I'm hoping to get it within the next 10-14 days. I've decided to apply for the PIO card once I get the US passport.

I also have to get my Indian passport cancelled, and I was wondering whether I can combine these two things when I apply for the PIO card? Should I just write a letter asking them to cancel it and send a return envelope or something? How much postage should I pay on it?

My concern with doing these two things (PIO and cancellation) separately is that, if they took forever to cancel the passport, then I may not get my PIO in time for the travel.

Anyone have any suggestions, ideas? Thank you.

I find it also interesting that CGNY asks for the original US passport (and original Indian passport as well), because I heard that for PIO it wasn't necessary to send the original document of the US passport. Maybe that's true for other consulates, but not the one in NY?

Hi,
I just did PIO for my wife and daughter as i dont have time for OCI. Anyway, it took exactly 14 days for the entire process at houston. Also, i sent my wife Indian Passport along with the package but did not send the US orignal passports for both my daughter and wife. Make sure to get the photocopies of the passport Notraized. I hope it helps. Please let me know if you have any questions. thanks

Thanks for your help, swami2100. Unfortunately, CGI NY clearly asks for the original US passport to be sent (and, along with photocopy!): http://www.indiacgny.org/php/showContent.php?linkid=57

I'll try cancelling the Indian passport separately and try my luck and then apply for PIO. Though there's no information I could find anywhere on their website. Better call them up, I guess.

Thanks again.

PIO Problem , Need Help!

Dear Sir/Madam,

This is Sxxxxxxxxx, a Trivalley Victim, Got Prosecutorial Discretion Recently for NTA. Now the Problem is i have applied PIO Card for My 2 months Old Daughter for her Visit to india, Now the Indian consulate is asking me for my Status.
Visa Status in USA (Father) - Missing
We have received the application but proof of visa status in the United States of the applicant's father is missing. Please submit copies of these documents to our office: Applicant.s father.s current US visas, a Green Card, or other proof from the US government showing current visa status.

a) Do i have to send them my Prosecutorial Discretion Court Order , i am scared they might reject my daughters PIO card based on my US Visa Non Status.
b) I have an I-20 has the expiration on it ending in may 2012, which i have applied for reinstatement . but it was denied.

What is the best way to proceed, i am confused what to do? i only have 10 days to respond them.

Please see my mail copy below from Travisa Outsourcing for your reference.

Requestin your valuable suggestion in this Scenario.

Thank you,

Sincrerely,

Sxxxxxxxx.
