physical green card

i really wonder how long you can wait for the welcome letters,,and the greencard...it seems like for ever.

Usually it takes within a couple days to weeks to get it. It really depends on the work load of the processing center. But I would say if you wait for a month after your interview(30 days), and still have not received it, Call USCIS right away.

I was thinking about that. I think it is a pretty stupid law. I would not carry the valuable green card whenever I go. If somehow my wallet got stolen or lost, the hassle of getting the replacement is too great.

In my 10 years living in the U.S, I have not been asked to show proof of my status except when applying for a job or getting a driver license. Even when I got stopped by the police for traffic violation, they will only ask for driver license and registration.

It will depends what part of the country do you live. If you live in the area where there are a lot of illegal immigrants and a lot of random status check, then you might want to carry the green card everywhere you go.

thanx for the advise,,i tried to call USCIS,,but all they ask is a reciept number which i don`t have..whats next for me,i fill its alot of time though 2months is long

You are expecting it far too soon. It can take months. Mine took two months.

Its a non enforced law, I would advise no one to carry there GC in practice. If you lose it you will forever more have problems getting in and out of the USA. You need to prove immigration status to obtain drivers licences, that should be enough for any law enforcement officer to run a background check on you and see that you are in status.
 
For me it's really taking forever. My wife was the primary applicant, we entered the country in May 2008. She received her SSN and plastic green card within a couple of weeks. I already had an SSN because I had an H1-B and I still haven't received my plastic card.

My temporary I-551 in my passport is just about to expire and nobody is saying anything if I call them just to check my case status online which is "Current Status: Case received and pending.'.

Could you please advice how can I have my temporary green card in my passport extended?

Is there anybody who didn't receive his/her physical green card within a year so had to ask for an extension? How it can be done?

I tried to schedule an infopass but "At this time, there are no information appointments available for the office in your area. Please try back again later."
