photocopy of certificate of naturalization to update Social Security status

Hi!
Today I applied for passport then I remembered about updating my Social Security status. My question is since I have sent my certificate of naturalization with my pass port application, is it possible to use photocopy of certificate of naturalization to update my Social Security status? Also how important is to update my Social Security status?

Wait until your passport comes back. It is better to wait a few weeks before going to update social security. People have had problems when going too early, as the update of your citizenship might not have made it to whatever database they check. Furthermore, photocopy won't work. Furthermore it is not critical, but in a world in which entitlements are checked very often it might be to your advantage that SSA knows you are a citizen now.

Social security office will need to see original. Just update status when you receive it back...there's no rush to get status updated, as long as you update it sooner or later.

Last time I checked, SS administration needs to see the original naturalization certificate. So, you can wait until you get the certificate back from state department. Also, it is very important to update your status with SS admin.
