Is it true that one needs to wait for 180 days after filing I-485 before they can use their EAD card? I have not completed 180 days.

My employment with the old employer terminated today and the new employer wants to hire me today. I was told that the EAD card can be used only after 180 days of filing the I-485.

If this is true then how come people keep saying that one could switch jobs immediately after filing I-485 and not have to even wait for 180 days?

Can someone help with the facts? I am desperate...

Not true.

You can start using EAD as soon as its approval date.

The 180 days comes from the AC21 memo section 106 (c) the relevant portion of which is that 485 remains unadjudicated for 180 days or more then INS will not deny a GC based on Change of employer.

This means that you run a risk of GC refusal when changing employer before 180 days from 485 RD if (a big IF) INS adjudicates in your case before that 180 days.

Maximum damage that has been caused is so far employment RFEs.
So stop panicking.
