Permanent Resident's out of country trip

Dear all,

I've received my physical green card on Feb. 2003, and have a plan to trip to my country next month.

How long can I stay out of U.S.A. without any reentry permit?

Are the green card and my passport the only required things to reenter U.S.A?

Is anybody knows the answers for my questions above? Thanks in advance.

On a related question, I'm thinking about going back to my country for up to three years. My plan is to come back for a week every five months or less. Also, I will keep my bank accounts and credit cards and continue filing taxes as usual. Will that be sufficient to keep my green card? Does it matter if I enter the US with a plane ticket originating and returning to a foreign country?

Hi Fsman,

I would caution you against coming back to the US every 5 months for a week just to keep your green card alive. Your interviewer at the port of entry may think that you have abandoned your permanent residency if s/he sees a pattern like that.

If you are going to be out of the country for that long, you should apply for a re-entry permit (it's good for 2 years).

You should try to buy a air ticket that orginates from the US and with final destination back to the US as well, instead of what you proposed.

This will help in case BCIS questions your intention to stay in the US.
